You might be surprised to learn that hiring a web designer doesn’t equate to a hands-off process. Here at Marra Creative Studio, you will have homework required and it does come with deadlines.
This might turn you off at first because maybe in your head you’re saying, “why do I have homework? I’m paying them all this money to build me a new website and now they want me to do some of the work?”
Let’s reframe that shall we? When it’s a collaborative process between you + the designer, that means we’re learning everything we can about you and your business. The more we know, the more we get a true sense of who you are, what you do, whom you’re making this product/service for, and how you want to build your community. That translates into a design that speaks directly to your brand and to your audience.
Doesn’t that sound a lot better than handing off your design and crossing your fingers & toes that it comes back looking like you hoped? We can promise you, that’s asking for guaranteed disappointment but can you really be upset? You weren’t as equally invested in the outcome of your website and while your designer is very talented, they aren’t mind readers.
We’re confident that you won’t be too overwhelmed by your homework tasks and ultimately, you’ll feel really really good about your investment! The (3) main forms of content that hold up our design process are —
1.) Website Copy
This is all text that goes in every section, on every page. We won’t sugarcoat it for you, it’s a big task with a ton of importance. Not only do you need to make sure you’re speaking to your target audience, but you want to write in a way that connects you to them as if you’re their best friend all the while being able to simultaneously perfectly tell them what you do and why they need to hire you immediately. Plan on this task taking you 10-20 hours to complete or hire a copywriter ASAP if that isn’t your jam.
2.) Imagery
Hi-res brand images are required and must have been taken less than 6 months ago. Trust us, you want fresh content. If you’ve invested in building a new website, why use photos that were taken a year ago? We can promise you that you’ll feel more confident presenting a website that feels relatable to where you are today than relying on the past. And please, don’t rely on iPhone photos to do the trick.
3.) Branding
Your website designers will need access to your full brand identity kit including all logo variations, typography files, and color palettes. Now is the time to get your ducks in a row and have all of these assets organized and uploaded to Dropbox or Google Drive so it’s a simple link to provide.
We strongly encourage you to have an open line of communication with your designer. Ask them questions, provide inspiration and give really clear + concise feedback.
